Melâmî Thought Research Association (MEDAD) was founded on September 23, 2011, in Izmir with the purpose of researching, developing, promoting, and teaching Melâmî thought. The association aims to implement the understanding of Melâmîsm in modern life, introduce the leaders and works of historical Melâmî thought to contemporary society, and pass this heritage on to future generations.
MISSION & VISION
MISSION
To guide those who seek to reach the truth of human existence as indicated in the Qur’an; to teach Hakikat-i Muhammedîye (the Reality of Muhammad) and Sırr-ı Melâmet (the Secret of Melâmîsm), enabling individuals to attain universal perfection by embodying divine attributes and adopting the ethics of Allah, ultimately reflecting the essence of Prophet Muhammad.
VISION
To carry out educational, cultural, and artistic activities to convey and sustain the universal perfection consciousness of Prophet Muhammad -who was honored with the verse “Today I have fullfilled my religion with you”– as well as Melâmîlik (the Path of the Messenger) to those who seek it; to introduce Melâmî perfect human beings (insan-ı kâmil) and their works to contemporary society and pass them on to future generations; to contribute to the scholarly and cultural heritage of Melâmîlik by producing new works; and to serve the advancement of both societal and universal perfection.
ABOUT MELÂMÎSM
Melâmîsm is not a philosophy, a movement, an ideology, or a mere viewpoint -it is a way of life-. Because of this, Melâmîsm cannot be strictly defined, described or confined. When it is limited by words and letters, it loses its deeper meaning. Thus, Melâmîsm is not explained but rather experienced.
Attempts to define Melâmîsm through words imprison its essence within letters, which is not true Melâmîsm. As Mevlânâ states in his Mesnevi: “The letter is the shell. The meaning within is like water. The ocean of meaning is with the Mother of the Book.”
Derived from the Arabic root “levm”, meaning blame or reproach, Melâmet or Melâmîsm can, for those who truly seek and are destined to understand, be described as “more than a Sufi order, rather a way of life.”
The Great Sheikh Muhyiddîn Ibn Arabî, in his work “Futûhât-ı Mekkiyye,” describes Melâmîsm and Melâmîs as follows:
“By Allah’s will, the Melâmetîs, also called Melâmîs, are the true masters and leaders of Allah’s path. Among them is the one master of all existence -our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)-. They abandon worldly needs to the world and the needs of the Hereafter to the Hereafter. They perceive everything with the vision of Allah, never confusing realities.”
Melâmîs are also associated with the sacred saying: “My close servants are hidden under my special domes. No one knows them except Me.”
Those who embrace Melâmîsm view it as an art of living, a sacred vocation. For this reason, Melâmîsm is referred to as “Meslek-i Resul” (the path of the Prophet) or “Meslek-i Celile-i Ahmediye” (the noble path of Ahmad).
Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri (Lord Ümit Bulut), the sixth link in the Melâmî chain of proof from Pir Seyyid Muhammed Nûr’ül Arabî, describes Melâmîsm as follows in his teachings and writings:
“A Melâmî cannot be defined. A Melâmî is either Allah or Muhammad! Although this may seem like an audacious claim, it can be explained: A Melâmî is one who embodies the ethics of Allah, assumes His attributes, and lives with the perfection of the Prophet (peace be upon him). In other words, a Melâmî lives with the awareness of Fenâ (annihilation) and Bekâ (subsistence) states.”
Melâmîsm does not embrace dogma, rigid traditions, or formalized rituals. Instead, it emphasizes the liberation of the soul from all constraints and its direct connection with Allah. Melâmîs are the people of the moment, living in the present.
Melâmîsm seeks essence, not form. Everything is directed toward and meant for humanity.
There are no formal titles, hierarchies, lodges, rituals, or ceremonies in Melâmîsm. Living with spiritual awareness is essential.
Love is at the core of Melâmîsm. In Melâmî gatherings, there are no predetermined rites or rituals.
Much has been said about Melâmîsm, and much more will be said. However, Melâmîs do not concern themselves with words but with living the truth. Everything happens in the present, and the essence is to live in the moment.
THE HISTORICAL PROCESS OF MELÂMÎSM
Melâmî doctrine is more of a way of life and a supra-order understanding in the history of Sufism rather than a specific tariqa, influencing almost every Sufi order.
Emerging in the 9th century in Khorasan and particularly spreading in Nishapur, Melâmîlik has continued its influence to the present day. Its historical development has generally been examined in three distinct periods, shaped by the social characteristics of each era. However, in the 21st century, with Pir Ümit Bulut Efendi Hz., a new period—the fourth period—has begun: the Melâmîyye-i Ümidî Period.
This period began with the first great Melâmî master, Hamdûn Kassar. He defined a Melâmî as follows:
“A Melâmî is someone who harbors no claims in his heart, exhibits no pretension in his outward demeanor, and keeps his secret with Allah hidden even from himself.”
Prominent figures of this period include İbn-i Münazil, Abu Ali Muhammed Essafaki, Zinnun-i Mısrî, and Mevlânâ Celâleddin-i Rumî. The first period ends with Mevlânâ, though its legacy continues.
The Second Period Melâmîs, which began with Hacı Bayrâm-ı Velî in Central Anatolia, are also called “Bayramîs” or “Bayramî Melâmîs.” Both the reasons for their emergence and their way of life differ from those of the First Period Melâmîs. While the First Period Melâmîs had a strict and rigid approach to asceticism, seclusion, meditation, mystical unveiling, and struggle, the Second Period Melâmîs were characterized by a greater sense of tolerance.
Ömer Sıkkînî Hazretleri, Göynüklü Selehaddin Tevî, İnce Bedreddin, Kızılca Bedreddin, Meczup Akbıyık, Sarı Abdullah, Akşemseddin, Mehmet Bican, Ahmet Bican, and İsmail Maşukî are among the Insan-ı Kâmil (Perfected Humans) of the Second Period Melâmîs.
The period when Melâmîs began in its current form is attributed to Pir Seyyid Muhammed Nûr’ül Arabî, who is also known as “Noktacı Hoca“ or “Seyyid Hoca”, and it is also referred to as “Melāmîyye-i Nûriyye.”
The Third Period of Melâmîsm emerged in the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire’s Rumelia province and spread from Usturumca, Üsküp, to the rest of the world. During this period, Melâmîsm īsm was systematized by Kutb-ul Aktâb Hazrat Pir Seyyid Muhammed Nûr’ül Arabî according to the conditions of the time, and explained to his followers as a “Path of the Messenger” with various stages. This characteristic distinguishes it from the First and Second Period Melâmîs.
It can be said that Melâmîsm has been embraced by many since the 9th century, that this school of thought has influenced Sufi orders to some extent, and that it has integrated with the doctrine of wahdat al-wujūd (unity of existence), continuing to the present day with significant influences on Turkish-Islamic culture.
Pir Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri, as the pioneer and spiritual leader of the Fourth Period of Melâmîsm, continues to convey the essence of Melâmî doctrine to the people of the 21st century. He strives to teach and transmit the universal perfection embodied by the Prophet Muhammad and the true essence of his religion. As stated in his hüccet (spiritual testament), he continues to impart the knowledge of Hakikat-i Muhammediye (the Reality of Muhammad) and Sırr-ı Melâmet (the Secret of Melâmîsm).
Through his various works in different fields, Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri contributes to the scholarly and cultural legacy of Melâmîsm doctrine, serving the advancement of both social and universal perfection. With his innovative, modern, contemporary, and reformist approach, he stands as the leading figure of the Fourth Period of Melâmîsm.
This era will be remembered in history as the Melâmîyye-i Ümidî Period, and Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri, along with the disciples he has nurtured (the Ümidîs), will be honored and commemorated for eternity through his invaluable contributions and teachings.
Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri
Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri was born in 1963 in İzmir. After completing his primary and secondary education, he received foreign language training abroad. He has been involved in trade since a young age.
The Fourth Period (Melâmîyye-i Ümidî Period) Melâmî Pir Ümit Bulut Efendi has been formally authorized as a qualified spiritual guide to transmit Sırr-ı Melâmet (the Secret of Melâmet) and Hakikat-i Muhammediye (the Reality of Muhammad) to those who seek it. This authorization was granted through a hüccet (spiritual testament) signed by Melâmî Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, the fifth link in the spiritual lineage descending from Seyyid Muhammed Nûrü’l Arabî Hazretleri, the Melâmî Pîr and Kutbû’l Aktâb (Pole of Poles) of the Third Period.
Ümit Bulut Efendi’s journey of spiritual search, which lasted until he met Melâmî Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, intensified during his time abroad. As soon as he returned to Turkey, he heeded the call of Mevlânâ Hazretleri saying “Come!” and went to Konya. During his visit to Mevlânâ, he became acquainted with the Mesnevi. Instead of seeking Mevlânâ at his tomb, he sought him in his works and conducted research on the Mesnevi at various foundations offering Mesnevi courses. As a result of these studies, he realized that the “Sultan” had not died and was present even in his time. From that point on, he left his books behind and began searching for that “Sultan.”
This search took a new turn in August 2002 when he met Melāmī Insan-ı Kâmil Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, the fifth link in the chain, who was authorized with a certificate (documented and qualified) from the lineage of Seyyid Muhammed Nûr’ül Arabî Hazretleri, in Çınardibi Village, Kemalpaşa, İzmir.
Upon completing his spiritual journey (Seyr-i Sülûk) under the guidance of Melāmī Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri understood the truth of Mevlânâ Hazretleri’s words in the Mesnevi: “When you find what you are looking for, the only thing you will find is that you should not have searched at all.”
Nine days before his passing, Melâmî Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri summoned Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri and entrusted him with these words:
“My son Ümit, I come from a pure lineage. You must continue this pure lineage.” Having received this sacred command, Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri was designated as the Pîr of the Fourth Period of Melâmî doctrine. Since April 3, 2011, he has carried out his role as a hüccet – certified Melâmî perfect human being (insan-ı kâmil), instructing seekers in the knowledge of Hakikat-i Muhammediye (the Reality of Muhammad) and Sırr-ı Melâmet (the Secret of Melâmet). He continues to guide individuals in integrating 21st-century Melâmîlik into their lives.
On September 23, 2011, Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri established the Melâmî Thought Research Association (MEDAD) in Izmir. Under the umbrella of this association, he continues his efforts to research, develop, and promote Melâmî thought, which holds a significant place within Islamic Sufi culture. His work focuses on bringing the Melâmî understanding into practice in modern life, introducing the pioneers and works of Melâmî thought to contemporary society, and ensuring its transmission to future generations.
As part of his service, Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri took the written works of Melâmî Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, reorganized them, and published them with official approval from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. These works are now available in numerous national libraries, allowing those interested easy access to these invaluable writings.
In addition to these works, Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri has published books such as “Kemālāt-ı Davud’tan Sohbetler”, which is a collection of his talks, and “Davud Yılmaz Divanı Şerhi” (Commentary on the Divan of Davud Yılmaz), a work consisting of commentaries on various hymns from the Divan of Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, along with a number of articles.
Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri, has taken on the role of producer for the “Davudî Seslenişler” (Davudi Calls) hymn album, which consists of hymns included in the Melāmī Hc. Davud Yılmaz Divan- a work entirely written from birth and conveying the truth with 90,000 words-. He has thus universalized these unique hymns through music, while pointing to this as the constitution of the Melâmî and the joy of Melâmîsm for his students.
Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri continues to introduce Melâmî thought to the people of the 21st century, embodying the universal perfection associated with the Prophet Muhammad. He remains dedicated to conveying the teachings of Hakikat-i Muhammediye (the Reality of Muhammad) and Sırr-ı Melâmet (the Secret of Melâmet), as written in his hüccet (spiritual testament), while explaining and transmitting the religion of the Prophet. Through his scholarly works in various fields, he contributes significantly to the intellectual and cultural heritage of Melâmî doctrine, all the while serving the elevation of social and universal perfection. With his innovative, modern, contemporary, and reformist approaches, Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri stands as the leader and pioneer of the Fourth Period of Melâmîsm.
This era will be historically known as the Melâmîyye-i Ümidî Period, and Pîr Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri, through his contributions and the disciples he has trained (Ümidîs), will be remembered for eternity.
The spiritual lineage of the Fourth Period Melâmî Pîr, Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri is as follows:
He is the 17th descendant in spiritual lineage from Prophet Muhammad. He received his hilāfa (spiritual authority) and a written certificate from Seyyid Muhammed Nûr’ül Arabî Hazretleri, the 20th-century Melāmī Pir and Kutb-ul Aktâb. His spiritual ancestors include Hulûsî Maksud Efendi, Hasan Lütfi Şuşut Efendi, Mahmut Sadettin Bilginer Efendi, Bozkurt Yılmaz Dalay (Ali Ulvî) Efendi, Melāmī Hacı Davud Yılmaz (k.s.) Hazretleri, and finally, Ümit Bulut Efendi Hazretleri.
